From the hazy webbed shadows of the darkest kiss, there moves an animal of longing. Covered up between the center of the moon and the eyes of Mother Earth she moves between the piping urgency of a flaring passage from underneath the Crypt of reviled adoration and squandered youth. On blackest wings, she hovers above us and nobody knows whereupon branch she will rest to watch and to pick her next casualty.

For the animals of the night are imperceptible, moving to ease back to see and at a recurrence too quick to endeavor to protect from the power. This is the power of craving and of adoration. This is the isolation and distress of the endless living power that lives inside the blood darkest crepuscular being. The Gothic domain takes a recognizable shape and discovers expression in a typical source; the dark, the red, the pink, the steel and the eyes.

There is a typical crease that ties every one of us together in our agony and euphoria and that is the reality of life and demise and the move between them both.

"There is something at work in my soul, which I do not understand."

Yes Mary, I agree with you, but the horror of my costume is that it cannot be removed or stored or brought back for Halloween. I am inside the root and try as I may I shall never break out of this brig.

It’s a world that is completely different. A Goth is interchangeable with anyone who has a pierced cheek, a zodiac tattoo and black laced up boots. Once I was growing up truly being a Goth wasn’t something you needed advertised but you felt pride in understanding that you were a subject matter expert on something vague or were extremely great. I spent hours listening to Bauhaus or even Henry Rollins spoken word tapes when most folks listened to top forty and read Harry Potter, I understood all the names of Ann Radcliffe characters and the Bram Stoker and their backstories. I wasn't trendy, I was a Goth.

Back before computers spread out of what a Goth is assumed to look like a processed vision, the term ‘Goth’ had not been a dark black haired freak that performed in carnivals and circus acts with piercings and black fingernails. The word is the precise reverse of its original significance now; a term used to inflict social harshness has become a term of endearment, everyone and their dog self is Goth because it can be applied like a iPhone image filter. I believed being called a Goth meant you enjoyed something so much that you had been not unwilling to forgo popularity and social trips. The enviable term is currently used as a marketing gimmick, and people who really deserve the label are lost in the noise.
